Experience rappelling excitement in the Sonoran Desert, Phoenix, Arizona!
What a rush! Join us for a half-day rappelling adventure where you will have the opportunity to complete several rappels of varying difficulty and lengths of up to 180 feet. Your guides will greet you at the trailhead with ropes and your gear, including backpacks, harnesses, rappelling devices, harnesses and helmets, as well as trail snacks and refreshments. Your adventure starts with a scenic hike through a Sonoran Desert preserve, followed by some steep scrambling to the top of the buttes where your rappelling will begin. From this point you will be presented with panoramic views of Metro Phoenix and the Valley of the Sun and its surrounding peaks. Your guides will fix ropes and provide instruction on safe rappelling procedures. Once the instruction is complete, the adreneline-fueled fun and excitement of your adventure begins–rappelling off desert rock! Your guides will provide any assistance needed as well as safety belays while you rappel.
Adventure Details
- Enjoy an approximately 30-minute hike through Sonoran Desert terrain to the rappelling area.
- Scramble up a steep butte to the top.
- Learn the technical aspects and safety protocol of rappelling from expert guides.
- Experience the excitement of rappelling several routes of increasing distance, including a 180-foot rappel with several sections of free-hanging descent.
- Summit the eastern butte for an unbelievable view of Camelback Mountain, Phoenix, Scottsdale, Tempe, Mesa and the Valley of the Sun.

What to Bring

Closed-toe footwear such as running, cross-training or hiking shoes. No sandals please.
- Long-sleeved layers for sun protection and in case it's chilly
- Sunglasses
- Hat or cap
What We Provide
- All Mad Desert Trekking rappelling adventures are lead by an expert, professional guide with either Wilderness First Responder or EMT certification
- Lightweight backpacks, rappelling harnesses, rappel devices and helmets for each rappelled to use
- Bottles of purified water
- Healthy trail snacks. We can accommodate dietary preferences.
- Any admission fees to parks or preserves
- Refreshments following your adventure
What's Not Included
- Gratuities for your guide. While it is at your discretion, we recommend a 20% tip for great service.
